When to Book Newborn Photos in the Philadelphia Main Line

Wondering when to book newborn photos? The short answer is during pregnancy — ideally in your second or third trimester.

I know that might feel early, especially when you are still thinking about nursery details, baby showers, and everything else on your list. But once baby arrives, life gets busy quickly. Booking ahead gives you one less thing to figure out when you are tired, recovering, and getting to know your new baby.

At my Glen Mills studio, I reserve your due date first. Then, after baby arrives, you contact me within 48 hours and we choose the best session date based on how everyone is doing.

Why Main Line Families Book Their Newborn Session During Pregnancy

I intentionally limit my newborn calendar to six to eight scheduled newborn sessions per month. This allows me to give every family individualized attention before, during, and after their session.

For families who want more support with planning artwork for their home, I also offer optional in-home consultations and in-studio ordering appointments. Limiting the number of newborn sessions I accept means I can be available for the details that matter instead of rushing families through the process.

Booking early does not mean you need to know your exact session date before baby arrives. You reserve your due date, and we finalize the actual session date after your baby is born.

What Happens If Your Baby Arrives Early or Late?

Once your baby is born, I ask that you contact me within 48 hours. From there, we will choose the best session date based on how you and baby are doing.

Babies do not follow calendars, which is exactly why I structure my newborn schedule around due dates rather than fixed appointments. If your baby arrives early, I adjust accordingly. If your baby decides to stay comfortable a little longer, we do the same.

I intentionally leave room in my schedule so families are not penalized because their baby arrived on a different day than expected.

The Best Age for Studio Newborn Photos

For most babies, the ideal time for posed newborn photos is between 5 and 12 days old. During that window, babies tend to be sleepier, curl more naturally, and settle more easily into the wrapped and gently posed images many parents love.

That said, every baby is different. Birth weight, feeding needs, time in the hospital, recovery after birth, and other individual factors all matter. There is no one-size-fits-all answer, and we will make the best plan for your baby.

The goal is never to rush your family into a session before you are ready. It is to create beautiful images while setting realistic expectations around your baby’s age and stage.

Is It Too Late If My Baby Is Older Than Two Weeks?

No. Babies can be photographed beautifully at any age.

If you are reaching out after your baby is born, I will always check my schedule and do my best to fit you in. Last-minute newborn sessions are accepted when availability allows, but I cannot guarantee space once the calendar is full. That is why booking during pregnancy is still the best option.

For babies older than two weeks, the session may simply look a little different. Older newborns may be more alert, need additional feeding breaks, or prefer being wrapped rather than photographed in more detailed naked poses.

Awake images can be some of the most meaningful photographs from a newborn session. Bright eyes, tiny expressions, and a baby looking directly toward the camera are all worth preserving.

Studio Newborn Photography for Philadelphia Main Line Families

My Glen Mills studio is prepared with what you need for a newborn session, including baby outfits, wraps, props, hats, headbands, and lovies (newborn sized stuffed animals :). You do not need to stress about bringing multiple outfits or trying to coordinate every detail while caring for a new baby.

Baby-only sessions typically last about two hours. Sessions including parents and siblings can last up to three hours, depending on your baby’s needs that day.

Every session is baby-led. If your baby needs to eat, be changed, be soothed, or simply needs a break, we pause. There is no benefit to forcing a schedule on a newborn.

The studio includes a private bathroom, comfortable seating, and drinks and snacks so parents can settle in and relax.

Baby-Only or Family Newborn Photos

You can choose a baby-only session or include parents and siblings. Both options create meaningful images, but I always encourage parents to consider being in at least a few photographs.

Many new moms hesitate because they do not feel like themselves after birth. That is completely understandable. You do not need to arrive feeling camera-ready or worry about knowing how to pose.

I guide you through flattering, natural posing and use camera angles that help you look your best. The focus is not on perfection. It is on preserving the connection between you and your new baby.

Siblings are welcome as well. Depending on their ages and personalities, I will plan the safest and most realistic approach for sibling images. Baby safety always comes first, and I will discuss expectations with you before the session.

A Safe, Clean, Baby-Led Approach

I have photographed babies for more than 10 years and continue to invest in newborn safety education and training. Jamie Englert Photography is a licensed and insured studio, and safety is part of every decision made during a session.

The studio is cleaned before each family arrives. Fabrics, wraps, props, and items that touch your baby are washed or sanitized, and surfaces are cleaned thoroughly.

I also maintain a strict illness policy. If anyone in the family is sick before or on the day of the session, I ask that we reschedule when everyone is feeling better. I keep vaccinations current as an added precaution for the families I serve.

I never place a baby into a pose that is unsafe or uncomfortable. If baby is not settled in a position, we adjust. Spotters are used when needed, and your baby’s comfort always matters more than completing a specific image.

What You Need to Bring

After booking, you will receive a detailed Newborn Guide that covers preparation, wardrobe ideas, what to pack, feeding guidance, session-day instructions, common questions, and more.

For baby, you generally only need:

  • A pacifier
  • Extra diapers
  • Bottled milk if you are pumping
  • Any meaningful personal item you would like included

You do not need to purchase newborn outfits for the session. The studio has a curated selection of wraps, baby clothing, hats, headbands, and accessories ready for you.

For parents and siblings, I provide guidance before the session and offer wardrobe options for moms and little girls. Optional hair and makeup can also be added for moms who would like a more pampered experience.

Plan the Session Before Life Gets Busy

The days after birth move quickly. Planning your newborn session during pregnancy gives you one less major decision to make during an already overwhelming time.

You do not need to know every detail right now. You simply need to reserve your due date, and I will guide you through the rest.

After your session, we will meet for an in-studio ordering appointment to choose the images and artwork that fit your home. You can learn more about custom albums and wall art designed to preserve this season beyond your phone or computer.
