The Ultimate Guide to Preparing Kids for Photoshoots: From Home to Studio
Preparing young children for a photoshoot can seem daunting, but with the right approach, it can be a fun and memorable experience for the entire family. Whether your session is indoors or at my studio, these tips will help ensure that your child is ready and excited for their big moment in front of the camera.
1. Preparing at Home Before the Photoshoot
The key to a successful photoshoot begins well before you arrive at the studio. Here’s how you can set your child up for success:
Talk About the Photoshoot: A few days before the session, start talking to your child about what will happen. Explain that a friendly photographer (stranger danger) will be taking pictures and that it’s going to be a fun experience. For younger kids, keep the explanation simple and positive.
Choose Comfortable Clothing: Select outfits that your child feels comfortable in. Avoid scratchy fabrics or tight clothes that might irritate them during the shoot. If your child dislikes a particular piece of clothing, it’s better to opt for something else, even if it’s not what you initially had in mind.
Need a perfect outfit for the session? Check out and support a local business here in West Chester, Design Life Kids. Kim, the owner, is super kind and helpful. (highly recommend)
Practice Posing and Smiling: If your child is old enough, practice a few poses and smiles at home. Make it a game by taking turns being the “photographer” and the “model.” This helps your child feel more comfortable when it’s time for the real thing.
2. What to Bring to the Photoshoot
Being prepared with the right items can make the session go smoothly and keep your child happy and engaged. Jamie also provides snacks and drinks for both adults and children.
Snacks and Water: Bring along some small, non-messy snacks like crackers or fruit snacks, as well as water. Keeping your child hydrated and fed can prevent mid-session meltdowns. Depending on the type of session, Jamie will discuss with you ahead of time the best time to add children to the session.
Favorite Toys or Comfort Items: If your child has a favorite toy or blanket, bring it along. These items can help them feel secure and may even be incorporated into the photos for a personal touch.
Backup Outfit: Accidents happen, especially with young children. Having a backup outfit can save the day if your child spills or gets dirty.
3. The Day of the Session
On the day of the photoshoot, try to keep the atmosphere relaxed and fun:
Arrive Early: Arriving a little early gives your child time to adjust to the new environment. Let them explore the studio or the outdoor setting, which can help ease any anxiety.
Stay Positive and Relaxed: Your mood will influence your child’s mood. Stay calm and positive, and your child will likely mirror your emotions. Remember, the goal is to capture genuine, candid moments, so don’t stress over perfection.
Use Bribes and Rewards Wisely: A small treat or promise of a fun activity after the session can work wonders for keeping your child motivated. Whether it’s ice cream or extra playtime, choose a reward that will make your child feel excited and appreciated.
Newborn Sessions: If your child needs a break and their part in the session is done, parents are welcome to take their child to a restaurant for snacks or food. Wawa, Chick-fil-a, and Mc Donalds are close by. Sessions can be long for the little ones, so sometimes a break works wonders.
4. During the Photoshoot
While the session is underway, there are a few things to keep in mind to help the photographer capture the best possible images:
Let Jamie Lead: Trust Jamie to interact with your child and get them to smile naturally. Avoid telling your child to “smile” or “look happy” as this can result in forced expressions. It is best to stay in the sitting area so Jamie can get those eyes looking straight at the camera.
Take Breaks When Needed: If your child is getting tired or frustrated, we will take a short break. A few minutes of downtime can make all the difference and help reset the mood.
With a little preparation and a relaxed attitude, your child’s photoshoot can be an enjoyable and memorable experience. By following these tips, you’ll help your child feel comfortable and confident, resulting in beautiful images that you’ll treasure for years to come.
